The majority of people use phrases such as “stop doing” or “end it” to end conversations or actions. This article explains synonyms of “stop” and “end” you can use to communicate more clearly.
Word for “Stop” or “End”
There are various words which can be used as an alternative to “stop” or “end” depending on the situation. In a previous article we have explained aboutdifferentiating between “stop & end” and “cancel & cancel”. You can also use words such as “leave”, “quit”, “abandon”, “cease” in place of “stopping” or “ending”.
Leave, Quit, Abandon, Cease
Before we go deep into the different words, let’s review the definitions of these words. Some words like “leave” have straight forward definitions, but some of the words are confusing. Let’s look at the definitions for these words:
- Leave: To go away from or out of a place
- Quit: To stop doing your job or activities
- Abandon: To leave or forsake something that you own
- Cease: To stop theactivities or process
Now, let’s look at the examples of using these words in place of “stopping or ending” actions or conversations.
Example 1: You are in a meeting and your manager arrives late. Your team members are discussing a project and asking some questions about the status. Whenyour manager enters the meeting room, everyone stops their conversation for a while. Your manager then tells the team that she will answer their questions after the meeting. If every person leaves the meeting room and goes to the cafeteria, we can say that they are “leaving” from the meeting. Although this is not the correct use of the word “leaving”, it is close enough. You can say, “Everyone is leaving themeeting room until my manager answers our questions.”
Example 2: Your wife comes to your room and asks you to bring her a glass of water from the kitchen. You usually help her when she is asked to do small jobs. However, she is watching TV and would not respond positively to your request. You can say, “I will not quit my job and bring you the glass of water now.” Other alternatives are “I won’t quit my job” or “I am not going to quit right now.”
Example 3: You are in a meeting with the HR team and they are discussing job role definition and responsibilities. One of the managersstarted telling some irrelevant things and the discussion began deviating from the subject. You can confidently tell the manager not to speak on the topic and ask him to discuss it outside. You can say, “The topic is a discussion on roles and responsibilities. Please cease from talking unrelated stuff and we will discuss it outside.” Or, you can say, “The discussion is about roles and responsibilities. Please discuss anything related in the current thread and stop talking off topic.”
Another alternative is to use the word “abandon” instead of “ceasing” or “quit”. For example, you can say that the moderator should continue the session and stop anyone from talking off topic. Or, you can say, “Please continue the session with only thetopic of roles and responsibilities and not any side discussions.” You can also say, “Please continue the session and discuss only on the topic of roles and responsibilities and not any side discussions.”
New Phrases to Use to Clarify Actions and Conversations
There are many similar phrases to“begin/start”, “continue”, “finish”, and “terminate” which people often use in their day to day life. For example, when you say you are “starting” something, the other person may interpret this as “continuing” from where you left. You can clarify this by using the following phrases:
- Stop doing whatever you was doing in the past and startover. (“Starting over” is the correct and standard phrase).
- I will not continue with this topic as it is irrelevant. (This is not correct. You should start with the topic but you can stop talking about irrelevant topics).
Continue with Topic
It is always better to use the exactphrases to convey your message clearly than to use paraphrases or synonyms. However, if you have no choice but use synonyms, here are some of the common words you can use in the place of “stopping” or “ending” action or conversation.
