We take a look at the tips to follow to extend the life of your laptop: how to charge it, what things to avoid doing, what care you should apply periodically… everything you need to keep your laptop as good as the first day.
More and more people are opting for a laptop instead of a desktop for many reasons, especially for the convenience, flexibility and versatility they offer. But sometimes we take it as a real extension of us and we don’t take care of it as much as we should. We think it will never break or that they are much more resistant than they really are.
That is why it is so important to change our habits, to understand what we can do with our laptop and what not. If you want tips to extend the life of your laptop, feel free to read on.
Proper ventilation is essential
As you will have seen for yourself, the laptop tends to get quite hot when we spend many hours using it. For this reason, it is important to keep it properly ventilated and to turn it off at night or when you are not going to use it for several hours. Of course, do not place it on your legs or on other surfaces such as a cushion, which will block the ventilation outlet.
Likewise, you should avoid subjecting your laptop to high temperatures by all means: do not work with it on the beach, on a terrace, etc. Heat is not at all a good friend of your laptop.
How to charge your laptop battery correctly
Should I let it run down, and is it bad to let it shut down when it runs out of battery? Although there is a lot of debate about how to charge a laptop or cell phone battery, there are some things we are clear about.
The main thing is that we should unplug our computer once the battery has reached 100%. That is to say, it is not at all advisable to leave it plugged all the time to the outlet when we have already charged it for a while. This will result in the harmful overcharging we were talking about before.
Of course, as we were saying, as for how and when to charge the laptop battery, there are a thousand opinions: some people think that it is best to let it discharge completely and give it a full charge; while others think it is better to leave it at 10 or 20% charge and then let it reach 80% or 90%.
Suspend your laptop instead of turning it off if you’ll be using it soon
Of course it is very important to turn off the laptop frequently, if possible daily for at least overnight. Of course, there are times when it might be more appropriate not to turn it off but to suspend it, shut it down, let it hibernate… whatever you want to call it.
The method of suspending or hibernating the computer consumes much less energy than turning it off and on frequently or in very short intervals of time, so it is better to opt for this method if you are going to use it again in less than three or four hours.
Interior maintenance: Do periodic cleaning and follow the updates.
Maintaining your computer, both internally and externally, is critical. Let’s start with what we believe to be the most important: the inside.
By this maintenance we mean cleaning the storage, formatting the disk if necessary, deleting old or unnecessary files, making regular backups and above all, keeping updates up to date.
An updated computer will last much longer and in better condition than one that is not, so try to keep up to date and always keep your most important workmate in perfect condition.
Exterior maintenance: Clean it without getting it wet and protect it from dust.
It is also important how we take care of the outside to keep it “at its best” for as long as possible. Dust that accumulates and enters through the keys and other crevices of the laptop can affect its performance and cause problems in the medium and long term.
With a cloth or kitchen towel you can clean the screen and keyboard every two or three days, thus preventing dust or bacteria from accumulating inside. For a more thorough cleaning, it is best to take it to an expert or use compressed air to remove all the “dirt” from the keyboard.
Be careful how you treat your laptop
As we said at the beginning, the maintenance of even the best laptop has become something we sometimes overlook.
So much so that we end up mistreating it a bit…
How? Carrying it in backpacks that are not suitable (with the risk of suffering shocks or displacement of parts), leaving it too abruptly on a surface, exposing it to extreme temperatures, carrying it back and forth in your hand without much protection or care…
Think about all these types of gestures that you make in your daily life and reflect on whether you could change them in order to extend the life of your computer. Think about what happens if something stops working during one of those shakes you give it, keep it in mind and treat it with care so that your laptop lasts as long as possible!
